The 2013 AFRA Christmas party was held in the Clybaun Hotel on Saturday 14th December. Around twenty-three people turned out on the night and a good night was had by all. The hotel made a big effort to make the elevated area very nice. The finger food was lovely and plentiful.
Thanks to the AFRA committee for making it happen.

On 19th October we held another clean-up and planting event to take us through to the spring. Despite the nippy weather seven households turned out on the day to lend a hand. Work commenced at 11am and was completed by about 1:30pm.
All the leaves on the main entrance road were swept up and the gully grates cleared. All the grass on the main entrance road, on the Clybaun Road in front of the apartments, between houses 49 & 50 and opposite houses 38 & 39 was cut. The stony path was cleared of litter. We also planted over two-hundred spring bulbs (one-hundred daffodils, sixty snowdrops and sixty Cap Cod tulips) in bunches of ten in front of the bush and shrub area between houses 49 & 50 and beside house 22. The bulbs were provided to the AFRA free of charge by Galway City Council as part of the Community Planting Initiative (CPI). These will add to the daffodils and tulips planted last year and should add some volume to the spring flowers.
In total we amassed eight bags of grass cuttings and leaves, three bags of litter and one white plastic chair. The bags and chair (which was cut up by Mike Corcoran and bagged) were collected by Galway City Council the following week.
Thank you to everyone who turned out and gave their time and effort.

To take us into the Winter, another successful clean-up of Ard Fraoigh was carried out by residents on Saturday 24th August.
The day started out damp but quickly turned into prolonged rain. Nonetheless, about twenty people participated including the children. All the public green areas were mown, all weeds were cut back, the bushes and shrubs lining the entrance road and at the end of the second cul-de-sac were pruned. Also, all litter was picked up from the roads and green areas and bagged.
In total twenty-nine bags were filled with grass cuttings, weeds and prunings and litter, two bags were filled with litter and we removed a pink plastic bin and filled it with recovered rocks. The bags and bin were collected by Galway City Council the following week.
Thank you to everyone who turned out and contributed to the effort, particularly given the bad weather. Also thanks to Peig Wall for donating a box of Roses for all the participants on the day. A sweetie or two while you’re working is always welcome.
Another successful clean-up of Ard Fraoigh, to take us through the summer, was carried out by residents on Saturday 8th June. We got a beautiful sunny day and approximately thirty people participated.
All the public green areas were mown, all weeds were cut back, the bushes and shrubs lining the entrance road were pruned, the remaining bushes between houses 21B and 22 were pruned back to the ground and the kerbs were swept. Also, all litter was picked up from the roads and green areas and bagged. In the days following the clean-up day Brian Forde sprayed weed-killer on all the kerbs.
In total forty-one bags were filled with grass cuttings, weeds, prunings and litter. The bags were collected by Galway City Council the following week.
Thank you to everyone who turned out and contributed to the effort. Rita Corcoran prepared a wonderful table of tea & sandwiches, crisps & soft drinks at 1pm. It was welcomed and enjoyed by all in the afternoon sunshine. Also thanks to Michael Maughan for the use of his pick-up truck to move the large volume of prunings.

Most of the participants had left before we got a chance to take the group photos (below).
In February Galway City Council Parks Department cut back the bushes on either side of the stony path (running from no. 17 to the top the hill behind Ard Fraoigh). They did a great job and the pruning has greatly widened the path.
